The color of annatto comes from various carotenoid pigments, mainly bixin and norbixin, found in the reddish waxy coating of the seeds.
Annatto is used as a coloring agent in many processed food products too apart from dyeing such as cheeses, dairy spreads, butter and margarine, custards, cakes and other baked goods. In these uses, annatto is a natural alternative to synthetic food coloring compounds.
It gives a bright saffron colour.
Ayurvedic/Medicinal/Healing Properties :-
Annatto seeds are used treat diabetes, diarrhea, fevers, fluid retention, heartburn, malaria, and hepatitis. It is also used as an antioxidant and bowel cleanser. Annatto is sometimes put directly on the affected area to treat burns and vaginal infections and to repel insects.
Dyeing process :-
Mordant the cellulose Fibers with Alum 10% Wof for 30 mins at 80C.
After Mordanting one wash to the fiber,
Take Eco-Saffron as per the desired shade, for medium take 5% wof and dye the fiber for 1 hour at 100C.
Now wash with non-ionic soap.
