At Sam Vegetable Colours, our story is deeply rooted in a passion for sustainability, ancient traditions, and the vibrant beauty of the natural world. What began as a venture driven by a vision for eco-conscious textile solutions has blossomed into a comprehensive enterprise, proudly bringing the art of natural dyeing to the global stage.
Our story began in 1994, at a time when the world was just beginning to realize the importance of sustainable living. We stepped into the field of natural dyes with a very clear and simple goal: to manufacture and export high-quality colors that came directly from the earth. Instead of relying on harsh chemicals, we turned our focus toward the incredible pigments found in plants and minerals.
In those early days, we spent countless hours learning the secrets of nature—understanding how different roots, barks, and leaves could produce vibrant, lasting shades. It wasn't just about making dye; it was about honoring a traditional craft while ensuring it met the high standards of the modern global market.
The year 2010 represented a pivotal turning point in our history and a major leap forward for sustainable textile production. After years of dedicated research and a deep desire to make natural color more accessible, we reached a significant milestone: the development of a comprehensive range of natural dye extracts specifically engineered for industrial application.
Before this breakthrough, many large-scale companies found it difficult to switch to natural dyes because they required specialized, traditional knowledge and were often hard to use in modern machinery. Our innovation changed that. By creating concentrated extracts that performed consistently, we made it possible for industrial-sized manufacturers to finally integrate natural, sustainable pigments into their existing production lines.
By 2017, we felt a strong desire to go beyond the manufacturing of dyes. After years of perfecting our pigments, we wanted to be the ones to apply them, ensuring that the final fabric looked exactly as we envisioned. To achieve this, we established our very own exclusive natural dyeing unit. This was a major step that allowed us to move from being just a supplier to becoming a hands-on creator.
Opening this dedicated facility gave us full, end-to-end control over the dyeing process. We could now oversee every detail—from the water temperature to the precise concentration of the dye—ensuring that every meter of fabric met our strict standards for colorfastness and beauty. This expertise allowed us to start exporting high-quality, naturally dyed fabrics directly to our international clients, who were looking for textiles with a truly organic soul.
In addition to creating our own collections, we also realized that other designers and brands wanted to bring natural colors to their products but didn't have the facility to do so. To support them, we expanded our services to include natural dyeing on a job-work basis. Today, we collaborate with various partners, taking their raw fabrics and transforming them with our sustainable dyes. Whether it is for our own line or a custom project for a client, our unit serves as a hub for authentic, eco-friendly textile artistry.
In 2020, while the world was facing many challenges, we decided to look deeper into the roots of our heritage. We realized that to truly honor the beauty of natural dyes, we needed to pair them with the most authentic, soulful fabrics possible. This led us to a wonderful collaboration with local artisans, which resulted in the installation of 10 traditional handlooms directly within their local villages. By placing the looms near their homes, we created a workspace that fits naturally into their lives, allowing our weavers to work with comfort and pride. This collaboration ensures that every yard of fabric is not only beautiful but also supports the traditional lifestyle and livelihood of the artisans who weave them.
Working directly with these artisans allowed us to create a sustainable ecosystem where traditional skills are celebrated and supported. By controlling both the weaving and the dyeing, we ensure that every piece of cloth we produce is a masterpiece of human touch and natural beauty.
Taking our biggest step yet, in 2025, we established our own stitching unit. After years of mastering the dye and the fabric, we wanted to bring the finished product directly into your home. This allowed us to transform our hand-woven, naturally dyed textiles into a curated range of home furnishings.
By opening this unit, we have completed the full circle of production. We now design and stitch a variety of products, including:
Every item is stitched with the same attention to detail that we’ve practiced since 1994. From the first plant-based pigment to the final hand-stitched hem, we are proud to handle every single step of the journey, ensuring that your home is filled with products that are as kind to the earth as they are beautiful to the eye.
